GUI Clients

An introduction to the Querix advanced thin client technology.

Phoenix and Chimera – The Graphical Clients

Render your 4GL applications in a graphical Windows environment, without changing your code.

Rendering 4GL applications in a graphical Windows Windows environment such as MS-Windows, Gnome, KDE, Apple Aqua, Phoenix and Chimera transform 4GL applications to look and operate exactly like native graphical applications. With features such as menus, toolbars, context menu, tooltips, embedded ActiveX controls / Java Beans, scripting and SSL communications, these two advanced graphical clients can help make the most of your existing 4GL applications.

Phoenix (Native Windows)

This native MS-Windows client system requires a 7Mb client installation but, due to its native binary, offers an exceptional performance only matched by character mode clients.

Chimera (Java & Web)

Because of its small JAR file size (500Kb) and architecture, this Java-based thin-client can be deployed with a static install or be embedded on a Web server and accessed remotely using Applet or Java WebStart (JNLP) technology.

As hardware performance levels continue to advance, so the performance levels between a true Java client and Windows are becoming comparable. And Chimera still enjoys the benefits of its portability, as it can be deployed on any machine supporting the Java2 Runtime Environment.

With both Querix advanced client systems, the user interface can be made very intuitive due to its virtually unlimited customization options. Using ActiveX controls to replace or create new objects, Phoenix can insert new functionality into 4GL applications. Whenever there is a need for a particular component which is not included in the Querix development suite, ActiveX controls (Phoenix) and Java Beans (Chimera) are the answer.

ActiveX controls can be created with any MS-Windows Development system, such as Microsoft Visual C++ or Visual Basic and Java Beans can be created in any standard Java Development environment.

Script and Configuration compatiblity

What’s more, if you are developing for multiple environments, Phoenix and Chimera, the Querix graphical thin-client for Java2 environments, share control names and properties. Each one implements ActiveX or JavaBeans as appropriate, keeping your coding to a minimum.

SDI/MDI & the application launcher menu bar

Phoenix and Chimera offer a SDI and MDI graphical mode. A menu bar (drop down menu) can be defined in various ways to launch server and client side programs
